Help w/ an Organic Unknown?
« on: February 12, 2012, 05:19:07 PM »
Hi there-

I am working on an assignment where we run some basic organic experiments, and am trying to identify the molecule.

We ran:
Mass Spec
13 C NMR
1 H NMR
IR
DEPT 135 NMR

I believe my compound is 4-heptanone.  And all of my data agrees with that (in my opinion), except for my DEPT.  I am not looking for someone to do this to me, but more of an explanation as to why my DEPT is not agreeing (maybe the scan went wrong?).  Can someone confirm or deny this thinking, though?  Here are the spectra:

http://tinypic.com/r/f5d389/5   (1H)
http://tinypic.com/r/t4u0ev/5   (13 C)
http://tinypic.com/r/2hwyxip/5   (IR)
http://tinypic.com/r/oa9q89/5    (Mass Spec)
http://tinypic.com/r/x423vl/5      (DEPT)

The 1H shows three groups of unequal H's, and the integrations make sense.  13 C shows for unequal carbons, which also makes sense as the molecule has symmetry.  The IR rules out any alcohols and supports the C=O bond.  Shouldn't I have 2 CH2 peaks and 1 CH3 peak for my DEPT, though?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Your DEPT looks like an APT spectrum.
