Producing liquid pool chlorIne using a salt water generator
« on: February 05, 2012, 05:34:03 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm wondering if it is possiable to produce liquid chlorine using a salt water generator... I tried it last night but AT&T what happened this morning was that when I checked the water it was very warm and it wasnt dense or yellow. I just used 8000ppm salt diluted in water.
I read that I might have to use caustic soda as well is this right?

If anyone knows what ratios I should use that would be great

Sorry for the discouraging answer...
Do NOT try to play with chlorine nor hypochlorite unless you're qualified. Both are deadly poisons.

I'd only recently heard of the use of electrolysis generating the ppm needed of hypochlorite to sanitize swimming pool water.  In fact, it may have been on this forum, so you may have some success with a forum search.  Your question is beyond me, however, its so specialized, you should get in touch with the manufacturer, or maybe ask on a forum dedicated to swimming pool care.  Adding caustic soda does seem wrong however -- you can't really add enough, to make a difference, that would still be safe to swim in.  Of course, the swimming pool needs pH control, but that's separate from your hypochloite generator's needs.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
