Oxidizing pyrite (iron sulfide)
« on: October 20, 2005, 04:07:42 PM »
A have alot of pyrite (ferric sulfide) from an old mineral collection. What kinds of products would result if I added some commercial peroxide solution on some pieces? I wouldn't dare do this without asking because I'm afraid of H2S forming.

If by H2s you mean Hydrogen gas you shouldn't have much to worry about. I've done hydrolysis (where you run an electric current through water to seperate H2 and O) before and purposely lit the Hydrogen on fire. With such small amounts you don't have much to worry about. Especially since you won't or shouldn't have a high concentration of Hydrogen gas in the air.

P.S. The flame was clear but definately burning because it got hot around the top of the glass after I struck a match by it.

I thought hydrogen just exploded into a big orange fire, but that sounds cool.
I meant the possible evolution of Hydrogen Sulfide, a super deadly gas.
My theory is that peroxide would oxidize pyrite to iron sulfate.

O Sorry. I see the S now sulfur. Things don't always register with me. Well now you know that Hydrogen gas is fairly safe as long as you don't have it in high concentration.  ;)

I made this reaction by myself in the lab and I obtained H2S and Sulfate ions, so both things are created.
