Does silver want to steal or give electrons?

I was watching a show on PBS last night and it said sodium wants to give away one electron and oxygen wants to steal two, I'm curious about silver.
And is there an easy way to tell how an element will act as far as giving or stealing electrons?

silver likes to (primarily) give up one electron to become the silver (I) ion. Or "Ag+"
