So for the next chemistry club meeting in my high school, I'm planning to have everyone make ferrofluid. I've read that the MICR toner + vegetable oil + rare earth magnet method (from HouseholdHacker on Youtube) doesn't work in the sense that you don't get the spikes. Can someone confirm if this actually works or doesn't work?
Also, I found this way -involving FeCl3, etc:

Does anyone know a reliable way to make ferrofluid that will have the spikes?
