So I am doing this pchem homework and come across this question, its an undergrad pchem course (quantum mechanics):
Consider a conjugated chain of 2n C-atoms. We treat the pi orbitals with the one dimensional particle in a box model. The box length is L=(2n+1)R where R is the average linear C-C distance. For 2n carbon atoms, a polyene chain has n doubly occupied pi orbitals.
the first sub question is to calculate the oscillator strength for the HOMO-LUMO transition n to n+1, i am currently working on this.
but for the molar coefficient i really have no idea how to related it to the chain length
(How does molar absorption coefficient vary with the chain length?)
thanks guys
