Camphor Sublimation?
« on: April 19, 2012, 04:58:11 AM »
I have been working on this new experiment for the last few months and my starting material is camphor.

After my workups, my % yield is about 60-78%.  After doing the MPLC- my % yield is around 11-20%.  From my reading and understanding, camphor has the potential to sublime at high temperatures- 204 degrees C.

Could there be a possibility that this product, a camphor derivative--- (basically an alyll group has been added to camphor , giving it a MW of 192; camphor's MW is 152.23) could it also sublime under the pressure of the rotovap machine? Or when exposing my compound momentarily to air (uncovered) while moving it to different machines or weighing it out, or exposing it to air while transferring it from the MPLC machine to test tubes?

I have been working very methodically and slowly , making sure I don't drop any liquid while transferring my compound into another flask etc.

Thank you guys in advance.

If your product was subliming in the rotavap then you would see it appear on the cold water condenser. Are you sure the yield or the product after work up is 60-78%! If you are only isolating 11-20% what is the rest of the material?
