Question about Beznene
« on: May 24, 2012, 11:09:22 AM »
First, I'm sorry because of my weak English :D

Second, I am solving my chemistry homework, and I found difficulty in solving it, so I hope that someone solve it or just give me the steps :D

The question is:

1,4-dichlorobenzene is prepared from benzene in two stepsp.

a) write the equation of the reactions involved. ( I solve this part )

b) 1,4-dichlorobenzene is obtained with two other isomers. What are these isomers? ( I solve this part too)

c) The overall efficiency of the synthesis and purification operations is 54%, calculate the mass of 1,4-dichlorobenzene obtained from 1 kg of benzene. ( this question that didnt know its answer )

d) This reaction is carried out in the absence of light and in presence of a catalyst. Why? What catalyst is used? ( I know the name of the catalyst : FeCl3 or AlCl3, but I dont know why we use this catalyst)

for c), If you get 100% efficiency, every mole of benzene will be converted into 1 mole of 1,4-dichlorobenzene. How many moles of benzene do you have in 1 kg? How much 1,4-dichlorobenzene can you make? What is 54% of that?

For d), you might want to look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrophilic_halogenation
