Why is there a difference in molar absorption values in liquid and gas phases for the same species?

I'm not sure if there's a real meaning or relationship to their absorbtivity and their state of matter.  When they're liquid or a gas, they simply interact with light differently and give different absorption values, even though they're the same material.
