Prac: separating funnel tap operation
« on: August 06, 2012, 09:50:54 AM »
Just a very quick question regarding separating funnel operation- every demo video I have seen uses the right hand to operate the tap. I am just wondering what the 'correct' way is/what method gives most control. I recall that burette taps are to be controlled using the left hand with the thumb in front and fingers behind. Since the funnel has an almost identical tap, should it be operated in the same way?

I don't believe this sort of glassware is designed with for a particular hand.  When you clamp them into position, you should plan ahead so the everything you need isn't in an awkward position for your dominant hand.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

As I understand it, most of the reason for the technique of using a burette valve is based on being able to add a solution one drop at a time with one hand, while swirling the flask to vigorously mix the solution with the other hand. You don't have that issue with a sep funnel. I usually use both hands, my left hand to steady the tip of the flask and the right to turn the tap.
