Which is the stronger base and why?
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:37:13 PM »
Hi,

LiOH, NaOH, KOH or CsOH. I think solvation of the cation is important as well as the Strenght of the ionic bond. So I think CsOH stronger than KOH than .

Can anyone confirm/help?

Thanks,

Nescafé.

I believe it is that way because of course sodium is less electronegative than lithium and pottasium less electronegative that sodium and so on.

Meaning the more electronegative the alkali the less electron density is on the oxygen.

There are complications involving the strength of the bond between the alkali and the new conjugate base. It depends on what your acid is.
