confuse about naming a chemical
« on: September 08, 2012, 12:20:10 AM »
Hi,
i am new here so if i post it in the wrong place plz tell me.... basically I'm just trying to name SnCl2 in both classical way and STOCK way...and my answer to that is becasue SnCl2 is a chemical contains both metal and non-metal so it's classical name should be tin chloride and STOCK name should be tin (II) chloride ...however, most people say that it's classical name should be tin dichloride?
   so anything help?

Use tin (II) chloride.
This is better because there are other tin chlorides and this name defines it exactly.
This is similar for a lot of other metal salts which can have different oxidation levels of the metal. Thus it is better to define this in the name.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

When naming with roman numbers by IUPAC rules it should be tin(II) (no space between the name and the opening parenthesis).
