sigma donor lead to high or low spin complex?
« on: October 28, 2012, 04:48:10 AM »
Since CN- is a sigma donor, so would (Co(CN)5)3- be high spin or low spin complex? how to explain? Can anyone help?

I just know that pi donor ligand will have high spin complexes...But, how about sigma donors?

CN- is a strong ligand. Thus, the splitting between the set of degenerate d-orbitals is large. So how exactly will you fill the electrons for this particular system?

The lower energy orbital will be filled up with electron first before filling up with higher energy orbital. So we will get low spin complex. Am i right?

Yes. It will be a low spin complex.
