Chromium from old audio tape
« on: December 25, 2005, 12:02:13 AM »
Does anyone know of a way I can dissolve the Chromium from it? Vinegar and peroxide aren't promising.

concentrated HNO3 will dissolve the chromium, but I think that it also dissolves the tape...

Yeah but if he's trying to get the chromium he won't really care about the tape, will he?

I tried it by myself with 65% nitric acid and it worked, it also worked with 7 M HNO3.

Unfortunately I don't have any nitric acid. concebtrated Hydrochloric acid doesn't seem to work. What's up with that! It's strange that this CrO2 is so inert.

Try out concentrated sulfuric acid. It's much for readily available than nitric acid. It may work or it may not. If it doesn't work then you'll have some sulfuric acid to play around with.
