Substitution and Elimination reactions and favorability
« on: October 30, 2012, 01:48:10 AM »
Hello,

I am not sure why protic solvents favor E1 and SN1 reactions, whereas aprotic solvents favor E2 and SN2 reactions. I just memorize, but I wanted to know some reason that I can grasp so I don't have to memorize and can just rationalize it.

Also, what are strong nucleophiles that are weak bases?

Think about the differences in mechanism between the two reaction types. Which reaction types involve charges and how could these charges interact with the solvents?
