Oxidizing flame of Bunsen Burner?
« on: October 29, 2012, 06:56:21 PM »
Which part of the Buunsen burner flame is oxidizing?

According to wiki.answers and my university course book, it is the 'Inner cone':

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Oxidizing_zone_in_the_Bunsen_burner_flame

but according to the following websites/files, it is the outer cone:

So what's the right answer?

Here's a page that defines the two:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidizing_and_reducing_flames  An important way to keep it clear in your head (regardless of the what a text book says) is to realize what the flames are composed of, and how that will visually affect the the way the flame looks.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
