What does CCl4 do when adding bromine? (organic synthesis)
« on: November 13, 2012, 04:47:52 PM »
Hi,

Doing some review problems and I noticed my book uses Br2, CCl4 when adding bromine to an alkene. What does the CCl4 do?

I know the mechanism, how the bromonium ion is formed and the bromide (or solvent is present) attacks from the other side.

Thanks,
~Cooper

I am not aware that it does anything other than to be the solvent.  One can sometimes replace it with another solvent; I have run this reaction in ethanol, for example.
