Solvent selection
« on: December 16, 2012, 02:41:35 AM »
We have some residual matter after distillation in our processes that we are looking for a solvent(s) to dissolve in. The residues are high boiling hydrocarbon mixtures; they are a fairly viscous goo and sold as a cheap by-products (no idea what for; but apparently someone has some use for them!).

Problem is we had some stored in  barrels that are fairly solid now and hard to get out of. Heating helps but is a bit cumbersome. The solublity doesn't need to be complete; just enough to get a free flowing viscous liquid is fine.

What might be suitable solvents to try? Maybe a mixture? Cheap would be good and possibly not too flammable or toxic.

Suggestions?

Xylenes and toluene are frequently used for this purpose, depending on the material you are trying to dissolve.

Thanks! I'd never have thought of decalin! Will test them all.
