Acetylsalicylic acid/Paracetamol reduction to phenyls
« on: December 25, 2012, 10:00:42 PM »
Hey guys.

I know acetylsalisylic acid can be reduced to sodium salicylate by adding NaOH and paracetamol to 4-aminophenol by adding KOH, but is there any easy way to reduce theese compounds to phenyls (phenol, benzene etc.)?

Thanks.

What you refer to is not a reduction but in the case of aspirin is an ester hydrolysis and the case of paracetamol the hydrolysis of an amide.
There is no easy way to break these compounds down to either benzene or phenol.
