Can Friedel Crafts Acylation be carried out on benzene
« on: December 25, 2012, 11:18:37 PM »
I was wondering if we can carry out the Friedel Crafts acylation directly on benzene. One of my teachers said that marks would be deducted if I tried to do so.
But I am of the opinion that the reaction will occur as follows:
[itex]C_6H_6+CH_3COCl+AlCl_3\rightarrow C_6H_5COCH_3+HCl[/itex].Can anyone shed some light on this?

Have a look here:
Acylation with acetyl chloride is very easy.

By the way Professor Google is easy to use.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

Acylation isn't really a problem with simple acyl groups. Alkylation is a different story, however. Each addition of an acyl group makes the product less likely to react than the starting material, but adding alkyl groups makes the product more reactive. Consequently, it can be difficult to control alkylation to give a single substituted product.
