Discrepancies Between Textbooks
« on: December 31, 2012, 04:43:41 PM »
In my copy of Chemistry by Raymond Chang, the Ostwald process is described as including this equation:
2NO2 + H2:rarrow: HNO2 + HNO3

However in another textbook, this equation is given:
3NO2 + H2:rarrow: 2HNO3 + NO

Which is correct?
Is it possible for both to be correct?

The Ostwald process has other, competing reactions associated with it as well:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostwald_process
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
