Chemistry Drawing Software
« on: December 28, 2012, 08:56:16 AM »
Can anyone recommend software to draw structural formulae for organic molecules? The software should be available online and be priced at under $50 if possible (free is ideal), i.e. I don't want a professional package really.

The functionality I need is:

  • Ability to draw all main bonds and groups in 2D, and represent 3D structures using dash and wedge bonds.
  • Ability to see the displayed formula (i.e. all atoms and bonds directly shown, including C and H) of my organic molecule.
  • Ability to copy-and-paste pictures of the formulae out of the software and into another one like Microsoft PowerPoint or Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to represent a general group as "R", including with other labels such as "R1", "R2", etc.. If the software allows me to edit the text on an atom's label that is ideal.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Thank you.

I have tried a few of these (including MarvinSketch) but the main problem appears to be that I cannot change a "CH3" group to "R1", "R2", etc. The text needs to be editable. Is that the case for ACD ChemLabs, or any other free program?
