Compound Synthesis from 3-pentanone
« on: January 22, 2013, 08:20:03 PM »
Can someone help me with these please? I don't even know where to start.

How would you synthesize each of the following compounds using only 3-pentanone as a starting material. Once you have synthesized a compound in one part of the question you may use it in subsequent parts of the question.

a) CH3CH2COCl

b) succinic anhydride

c) acetic propanoic anhydride

d) CH3CH2COOCH(C2H5)2

e) H2NOC-CH2CH2-CONH2

f) succinimide

g) 3-ethyl-3-pentanol

What I know...

(a) if I could split the compound in half and make CH3CH2COOH then I could use SOCl2 to get the desired product

(b) If I could set to HOOC-CH2CH2-COOH then I could use heat to get succinic anhydride

(c) ?

(d) ?

(e) I could use the HOOC-CH2CH2-COOH from (b) and treat it with NH2 and heat

(f) I could use the HOOC-CH2CH2-COOH from (b) and treat it with NH3 and heat

(g) I can treat 3-pentanone with CH3CH2-MgBr and H3O

See image for a starting point or hint(s).

Using the original starting material and compounds 1, 3, & 4, you could make (a), (c), (d), and (g). I'm still working on (b), (e), and (f), but hope this gives you some ideas.
