Reaction between disulfiram and silver cation
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:39:23 PM »
Hi, I'm trying to understand the precipitation reaction between disulfiram (tetraethylthiuram disulfide) and Ag+.
This reaction is used by the European Pharmacopoeia for the precipitimetric titration of disulfiram. From the quantitative equivalence, it seems that the disulfiram:Ag+ stoichiometry is 1:5

I did some research; I found that Ag+ precipitates with disulfides with a disulfide:Ag+ 2:3 stoichiometry, and also found the explicit reaction. However, I don't know whether this is part of the disulfiram reaction or if the latter is completely different.

Is there anyone that can write/explain the disulfiram reaction and its stoichiometry?

Thanks!
