Applying the Butler-Volmer Equation to Electroysis of NaCl
« on: March 11, 2013, 11:54:10 AM »
Electrolysis of an aqueous NaCl solution can occur when a potential difference is applied across two electrodes. The two anodic/cathodic reactions that can occur are:

2Cl-aq   :rarrow: Cl2 (aq)+2e-

2H2O+2e-  :rarrow: H2 (g)+2OH-(aq)

I understand that the Butler–Volmer equation can be used to determine the current generated due to corrosion of electrodes but can it be applied to the above situation? If so, how can I find out values for the various constants (exchange current density & the charge transfer coefficient)? If not what equation can apply to the above to obtain a quantitative expression for current?
