solid at RT, evaporates at ~50C (120F)
« on: March 25, 2013, 04:47:39 PM »
Can anyone think of a substance that is solid at room temperature, and evaporates at about 50C/120F or lower?  And is also non-toxic if inhaled.

If it goes through a liquid phase or sublimes, either is fine.

My copy of the CRC lists:

acetyl chloride
4-chloro-butyraldeyde
chlorocyclooctatetraene
cyclopropylamine
ethyl ethynyl ether

and 7 more as having boiling points at 50 C.  You can get a CRC at a local library or university library and a more recent edition may provide others.  I didn't check any of these for cost, safety or stability, that's a task for you.

Thank you.  What does CRC stand for?

acetyl chloride
4-chloro-butyraldeyde
chlorocyclooctatetraene
cyclopropylamine
ethyl ethynyl ether

These are not all solids at RT and not all safe to inhale.

Sorry.  I didn't cross check the CRC to see which were solids at RT.  However, when you have an application like this, where you have a melting point or boiling point in mind, and you want to know the possible compounds -- the CRC is the place to go.  The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics published by the (now defunct except for the publishing arm) Chemical Rubber Company, is a large book of tables of various statistics on known chemical compounds.  Its found in any university library or even public libraries.  Just ask for it by CRC.  The reference librarian has heard of it before.

*[EDIT]*
I used the incorrect name at first, but the acronym remains unchanged

How about tert-butanol?
mp = 25 to 26 °C
bp = 82 to 83 °C

I don't know if it is safe.
