Calculating Reduction Potentials
« on: March 31, 2013, 01:18:35 PM »
If two reactions are given:

Co3+ + e-  :rarrow: Co2+   E°= 1.82 V
Co2+ + 2e-  :rarrow: Co     E°= -.28 V

How do you find the E° value of this reaction:

Co3+ + 3e-  :rarrow: Co

The answer is .42 V. I thought I could just add the potentials, but that doesn't work...

We just had this same question literally yesterday.
