The last structure after heating has too many carbons if the product is pentatonic acid. Heating will decarboxylate the do-acid to give
OC(CCCC)=O
So somewhere along the line you need a propyl halide.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

I submitted that structure...oh well...they marked it wrong.
Do you know what C is by any chance?

I find these questions very ambiguous. In that case structure D is the one you drew for  (e) but with 1 less carbon in the chain.
I did not say that my structure was (D). That is the final product you want to get.

You entered the wrong number of carbons in c) and e). In c) the product would be butanoic acid and in e) hexanoic acid. The problem asks for pentanoic acid.
