Mass Spectrometry - Instrumental Inquiry
« on: April 04, 2013, 09:24:44 PM »
Hi chemists and/or physicists,

I am interested in the properties of the mass spectrometer.

What is the limit of determining the mass of a sample? Can MS determine the mass of an entire protein? Can MS determine the mass of anything less massive than the electron, if something like this does exist?

Ionization specific questions
1) What is the main difference between the electrostatic ion trap and the quadrupole ion trap?
2) What role does the geometry of the ion trap play in an electrostatic ion trap and in a quadrupole ion trap?

Is there any literature that you think would be beneficial for my quest to understand mass spec?
