plastic from oil
« on: April 06, 2013, 07:36:39 AM »
Hi all, is it possible to find any relevant information about making plastics from homemade oil ? Thanks :)

(I understand that this question sounds silly and I am aware of problems connected to this topics, but I am looking for a set of information about this topic. Thank you very much for your time!)

Let's start by trying to understand what the question really means.  What is the chemical structure of a molecule of "household oil" -- the quotes means you get to pick one that you look up and draw.  Then, pick a "plastic" -- again, there are many.  Compare the structures, and see if there's a similarity.  Finding the reaction will be harder, but we have to see what's possible first.  There is no chemical reaction, for example that will convert NaCl into H2O.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
