Acids and Bases Question
« on: June 14, 2013, 04:30:26 PM »
State whether the following compounds will act as acids or bases when added to water:

ClO2

SrO

SO3

My attempts:

I know that the ionization constant is 1.4E-14, the path I want to do is to actually figure out the pH levels after some solution amount has been added. Is this correct? Or do I need to calculate the concentration of the given examples, and then it will be 1.4E-14 divided by that concentration, and then take the anti log of that number. How do I calculate concentration? Any help please?

In general nonmetal oxides form acids when added to water and metal oxides form bases when added to water

Try to classify those substances as metal or nonmetal oxides then just apply the rule
