I have two compounds: diethyl ether (with a boiling point of 34.5 degrees C) and 1-butanol (117 degrees C). According to my text, they have the same number and types of atoms and I must state why one has a higher boiling point than another. After looking through my text, I found that the correct answer is that 1-butanol can form H bonds. I'm curious as to why diethyl ether can't but 1-butanol can.

What is the functional group of an alcohol and of an ether? What is different.
