Real World Fractional Distillation Experiment.
« on: August 02, 2013, 12:42:27 PM »
I want to get a group of UG students excited about Fractional Distillation.  I don't think toluene and cyclohexane separation excites anybody.
I had a couple of thoughts but one that comes to mind is the fractional distillation of used motor oil.

Here's my question.
Help me trouble shoot the problems with doing this experiment.

The other is:  The distillation of Ethanol from the biosynthesis of ethanol.

Same thing.

My point is that I want to bring a real world issue to this process.  IF you have done something that's inspirational please let me know.  Thanks.

I suspect you'd find fractional distillation of used motor oil too difficult.  Ethanol from a fermentation shouldn't be too difficult.  Start with the equipment you have available for the students to use and do a dry run yourself to see if there are potential problems.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
