Whats wrong with these resonance structures?
« on: August 07, 2013, 10:09:11 AM »
I input this into the homework program as my answer and it counted it as incorrect, so I was wondering if I did something wrong. Its kind of hard to see in the picture , but I have a negative charge on the nitrogen with the two double bonds.  I put in brackets, resonance arrow, and it wouldn't let me input lone pairs, so I just want to be sure, that chemically I did not do anything wrong. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if it's just my impression, but to me it seems like in the left resonance structure there isn't shown a cyanide group  N=C- , but something like N=C=C- instead

you might wish to check for that

... as besides of this, everything else would be o.k. with me

I think may be expecting three resonance structures, the one given plus two more.

The program actually said not to draw only the two and not to repeat the one given.

Either way, I checked with my professor and he said its correct, but to be careful when drawing lone pairs and negative charges, making sure that everything is clicked on and drawn exactly where it should go because the program is sensitive.

Other than that, thanks to all answers.

I would show the lone pairs explicitly, especially on nitrogen.  One could also show them on oxygens.
