Etherfication of alditols?

If I have an hexoalditol with only the first and fifth carbon bearing a hydroxyl group, and the rest having methyl ethers,  can I just do a williamson ether synthesis on the first and fifth carbons only to put on , say a butyl group?

Don't see why not. But are you concerned about the stereochemistry of the secondary OH?

Initially I didn't thing of it, but just out of curiosity, would there be a way to obtain a specific stereochemistry? Or would I have to go a completely different route?
