Are there any rules for determining endo/exothermicity qualitatively?

Why is it that the formation of a dimer is exothermic?

What do you mean by "qualitatively"? If you know the reactants and the products of the reaction I suppose you can make a prediction. But you have to be an experienced chemist
 ;)
