Calculation of Free Energy of Formations?
« on: September 30, 2013, 12:33:34 AM »
How are free energy of formation values calculated exactly? For example water has  has a  free energy of formation value of -237 kJ/mol. How is this energy being released actually being measured? Thanks in advance.

Free energy, I think a misnomer. It is not exactly energy though having energy units. It is -TdS(universe). It is related to enthalpy and entropy of the reaction i.e. dG = dH-TdS.

Yes I know dG = dH-TdS but how are these values found experimentally? Or if they are not found experimentally how does one go about  determining free energy of formation values (that can be used to find the change in free energy of a chemical rxn?)
