The periodic table of the elements contains many trends. During this lab, you will locate data on the Internet and prepare a data table and graph in order to explain some of these trends.
PROCEDURE:
Use the Internet to locate data for the atomic radius for elements 1-56.
Using graphing software, prepare a data table of the atomic radius and atomic number.
Your graph should have all of the data points connected with a line.
Repeat steps 1-3 for the ionization energy and electronegativity.
ANALYSIS:
Copy your graph into an image manipulation program (such as Microsoft Paint).
Draw distinct vertical lines at the end of each period.
Select 2 different colours, which will be used to trace the trends in groups 2 and 16.
Create a key (eg, group 2 = red, group 16=blue). Connect the points of each member of the group/family in the assigned color.
Repeat with the other colour, for the other group.
QUESTIONS
State the consistent pattern you see in the graph when looking at the groups. What trend do you notice?
