Lab Report Help.
« on: October 01, 2013, 10:46:31 PM »
I have answers to these q's but just to double check.

1) How would you classify sodium benzoate? Ionic, molecular, or both?

2) Based upon the rules of solubility, would an ionic compound dissolve in gasoline? Why or why not?

If I could get a reply ASAP that would be great! Thank you much.

Tell us your answers.

1) I classified Sodium Benzoate as being ionic because it is a conductor of energy and at STP it maintains a solid state. (Not sure what more I can say about that...)

2) An ionic compound would not dissolve in gasoline because "like dissolves like" and so an ionic compound in gasoline would have different polarities which would not give the ionic compound the capability to dissolve.

The first answer I don't understand. What do you mean it conducts energy. Sodium benzoate is a salt what can be dissolved in water and gets dissociation. It conducts current. It has a very polar group COO- and the sodium ions Na+.

The second answer is better. Similar compounds dissolve in similar solvents.

Okay so I guess that makes it molecular...

Thanks for your help.
