I need help with this question of predicting spontaneous redox reactions. Thank you so much.
Question: Predict the reaction that will occur when Ni and Fe are added to a solution that contains both Cl- and Br-?
My solutions: I've listed out all the entities present: Ni Fe Fe3+ Ni2+
According to the entities that are present, Fe3+ should be the strongest oxidizing agent and therefore should undergo a reduction with an equation of Fe3+ +e- ---> Fe2+. Nickel would be the strongest reducing agent and therefore should undergo oxidation with
Ni ------> Ni2+. However, the answer I received indicated otherwise, where the answer is (Ni+2 +Fe ---> Ni + Fe2+). I really need help and clarification on this. Thanks again to all whom are providing assistance.
