Iron II Sulphate and Iron III Sulphate
« on: October 07, 2013, 10:18:14 AM »
Can anyone recommend a simple experiment to determine the presence of Iron II Sulphate or Iron III Sulphate?
e.g. you are given a sample and you want to know which it is. There is no need for ultra sensitive data, just a general determination of what it is? Any help appreciated as always.

Do you know prussian Blue?

Iron-II  reacts with red ferricyanide to a dark blue color.
Iron-II do the same with yellow Ferrocyanide.

Other option is to add thiocyanate, what gives blood red color, if iron-III is present.

You're a star. Do you have any idea what the result would be if it was a mixture of the two?

The mixture would show the same.

To determine both you can use Rheinhardt-Zimmermann Titration without SnCl2
