I am writing up my theory for this week's experiment which is using different extraction methods and separatory funnels to extract a desired product. The introduction on the lab notes a simple case of extraction where one substance is more soluble in the organic phase and the other more soluble in the aqueous phase. Upon proper extraction (organic phase separated from aq. phase, dried, and organic solvent evaporated to leave organic solute) he noted that the utility of this method can be enhanced by the fact that certain organic functional groups form salts under specific conditions. I would like to include in my theory the reasoning of why it would enhance the process. Any takers?
