Lead(II)iodide synthesis and it's properties
« on: November 05, 2013, 06:01:42 PM »
Hi all,
Im doing my first inorganic chemistry research+synthesis project. And I'd really appreciate if you could give me some orientation.
I'm going to do a lab synthesis of PbI2, and I have to research about it's properties, structure, reactivity, sybthesis methods...
I wasn't given any bibliografic reference, so Im asking for where to start, since I dont know any book that goes deep into specific compounds.
The way I think Im going to do the synthesis is oxidation of Pb with HNO3 an then reacting the lead nitrate with KI, and finally recrystallization (any tips on this last step?)
Any paper, link, book, synthetic method would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

Have you checked wikipedia? If not for properties, then at least for references?

Yes I did, but I didn't find so much: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead(II)_iodide

1. Pradyot Patnaik. Handbook of Inorganic Chemicals. McGraw-Hill, 2002, ISBN 0-07-049439-8
2. Salter, Thomas W., Field’s Chromatography: or Treatise on Colours and Pigments as Used by Artists By George Field. An entirely new and practical edition revised, rewritten and brought down to the present time, 1869

I do not think the 2nd one would be of much use. I'll check the first one if I find it in the library, but still not so many sources of information...
