Is butane a better solvent as a liquid or a gas?
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:14:16 PM »
Would liquid butane better dissolve other organic compounds, or is it better in its gaseous state?
Is there any particular reason?

This isn't for homework, it's just something my chemistry prof wasn't able to answer for me (some school I go to)

You can't really dissolve something in a gas, gasses mix but only liquids can make solutions.

There is the supercritical state (152°C & 38 bar, I believe) which is a different matter entirely.

It's like asking does water dissolve salt better or does steam?

Here, I guess the proper term is actually super critical fluid, my bad. So is it better as a super critical fluid or as a cooled liquid? Is there a formula or some general trend I can look up?
