i'm trying to figure out the role of the base in the catalytic cycle of a heck reaction when i have something like:

Pd(OAc)2,2Ph3P/(ch3ch2)3N

If you write a balanced equation for the reaction, it should become clear.

Do you know the process of the Heck reaction?   What is done at each step of the cycle?
