Expanded Structural Diagram help

Hey there, I'm back!

I'm working on Condensed Structural Diagrams for hydrocarbons, and I'm following a tutorial provided by the online course but I've pretty much hit a roadblock (because I'm dumb lol). Basically, I'm starting off by making expanded structural diagrams which I can then convert to Condensed structural diagrams for the coursework.

The chemical is 3-ethyl-2,3-dimethylhexane

Ethyl is 2 Carbons....but there's a 3 prefixed...does that mean it's 6 Carbons? (2 x 3 = 6). Because with only 2 Carbons, when I move onto the 2,3-Dimethylhexane, there's no 3rd carbon for me to branch out of, so I'm assuming it is 6 Carbons.

As well, how do I know how many Hydrogens to toss in once the diagaram is almost complete?

Taking this backwards, I'd ignore the hydrogens until last, and add enough to satisfy Carbon's valence

For your molecule, the first place to start for me would be the end of the name. What does hexane tell you?

I'm asking about Ethyl.

I have no clue what Hexane is/means.

Hexane would be the root (longest carbon to carbon chain) of 6.

What does that have to do with Ethyl?

The hexane chain is what the ethyl chain is attached to in this case at carbon 3 on the hexane and that is why you were told to look at hexane by sjb.
