question about resonance
« on: December 12, 2013, 08:43:04 AM »
hello I have a question from my review of organic chemistry.
But I do not understand what it's encoding method.

the observed amount of heat evolved when Cyclooctatétraène is hydrogenated in 110 kcal/mol. what does this tell you about the possible resonance energy of this compound?

can you tell me the answer or give me a link to understand how to answer this question.

Cyclooctatetraene, is it aromatic?
If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the precipitate

Please post in English.

Do you understand the concepts covered by the text you pasted in from Wikipedia?

cyclooctatetraene is not aromatic, but is not non-aromatic. Its reactivity is a characteristic of ordinary polyene, that is to say it follows addition reactions. However, benzene, aromatic, characteristically following substitution reactions, no addition. here is the response from wikipedia. thank you

cyclooctatetraene is not aromatic, but is not non-aromatic.

hmmm....

Cyclooctatetraene has 8 pi electrons; does that satisfy the (4n+2) rule for aromaticity?  If not, it is antiaromatic and therefore not subject to the increased stability that aromatic compounds experience.
