Chloride to zinc chloride concentration
« on: January 20, 2014, 04:53:49 PM »
I need help converting from percent chloride to percent zinc chloride. Is it as easy as

10% Cl x (136.315 ZnCl2 /35.453 Cl) = 38.45% ZnCl

Chances are you are right. But without context it is hard to be sure.

Well the problem is to calculate the zinc chloride and ammonium chloride concentration if the solution is 10% chloride. So I calculated the zinc chloride concentration as above as well as doing the same for ammonium chloride.

Oops, there are no chances you are right, I am an idiot.

How many moles of ZnCl2 per mole of chlorine (hint: no formula for purpose)?

If the solution contains 10% of chlorides and is a mixture of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride, there is not enough data to solve.

So it should be

10% Cl x (136.315 ZnCl2 /(2 x 35.453 Cl)) = 19.225% ZnCl2

For the ZnCl2 portion?

Or So it should be

10% Cl x (136.315 ZnCl2 /(2 x 70.906 Cl2)) = 9.6125% ZnCl2

For the ZnCl2 portion?

Yes, one of those.

2×70.906=141.8, so it would mean 136.3 g of ZnCl2 contains 141.8 g of Cl2.
