KNO3 synthesis from either KOH or NaOH - reaction discussion
« on: January 31, 2014, 03:22:12 PM »
Hi I am new here I wonder few thing about this reaction I done lot of time but never understand it totally.  As ammonia smell bad, I wanna know about when I make the reaction let's say 40 gr of ammonium nitrate with lets say about 28 gr of KOH and water.  When you put those together it make a huge bubbling of toxic ammonia gas....  Even when I let everything dry and loose ammonia gas. There is seem to be infinite of ammonia release when I add water or when I just heat it, it make more and more I am supposed to be left with KNO3 but it doesn't  burn well with sugar and make a marshmallow that make me suspect there is still (NH4)(NO3)... Any help would be appreciated here. It is not my biggest synthesis but that one gave me trouble as I hate to burn myself with hydroxide.

Thank you !

Sorry.  But there are many things wrong with your plan.  You do need the very basics of chemistry to perform some chemical reactions, even if they sound simple.  Since you're working with strong oxidizer that can be used for explosives, and another reagent that is difficult to work with,  I wonder if we can help you at all.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

1 molar equiv KOH, 1 molar equiv NH4NO3.  Dissolve in water.  NH3 will be evolved.  Allow to evaporate.  Done. KNO3.

Do not use NaOH, that will gave NaNO3 which is much more hygroscopic and can be sticky.
