Does the Horner Wadsworth Emmons reaction work with formaldehyde ??

This seems silly to me in practice.  Just buy Ethyl crotonate.  But in theory I am sure it would.  May have to use excess phosphonate.

MissUK, it's important to realize that Horner-Emmons reagents (stabilized ylides) are used to introduce (E) stereochemistry in carbonyl compounds. There would be no logical synthetic utility for using formaldehyde.
